_HISTORY
Obesity and diabetes have been a growing concern in the United States for a number of years and a catalyst for the former First Lady Michelle Obama “Let’s Move” campaign. Data in a report released by the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum indicated roughly 1 out of 5 NHPI high school youth (20.4%) are obese, one of the highest percentages among all racial groups in the United States; and 1 out of 3 NHPI high school youth (33.5%) are likely to be overweight or obese.
Following the call of the First Lady, Michelle Obama Washington NHPIs set forth to initiate the first ever Move It event in 2011, focusing on bringing health education and fitness activities to Pacific Islander youth and families. Every year we will challenge ourselves to bring needed information to educate our Pacific Island communities to Live a Healthier Life.
OBJECTIVE
The President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (the Commission) has prioritized the alarming and increasing rate of overweight and obesity plaguing Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities as foremost in its outreach efforts.
We are determined and motivated to ensure that this critical initiative is brought to the awareness of our Beautiful NHPI people.
Join us and Lets Move It!.
